Feather 9

Hi everyone,

Nicole here today to share a super simple watercolour technique that lets a simple card really make a splash! I used the following card supplies:

  • Papermilldirect White Hammered Card
  • Papermilldirect Slate Grey Card
  • Kuratake Gansai Watercolours
  • Feathers cut with a Silhouette cut file
  • Water and a wide paint brush
  • Watercolour card

I cut 5 feathers and laid them alternating on a panel of watercolour card to get the right placement.

I picked out my colours I wanted to use from my watercolours by testing them on a scrap of card first.

Feather 3

Once happy with my chosen colours I used a wide brush loaded with the watercolour paint to swipe on colour just a bit wider than the feathers on the watercolour card.

Once all the colours were on I let them dry natually. You get a better effect if you let them air dry, using the heat tool to try them changes the look and colour slightly. Once they were fully dry I glued the feathers down on the colours, making sure to alternate the direction they were laying in.

Feather 5

I watered down some of the copper metalic watercolour paint on a acrylic block. I used a rounded paint brush to flick this all over the panel with the feathers.

Once this was fully dry I adhered a happy birthday label sentiment to it and then stuck it to the slat grey panel to matt it but make the colours pop more. I then mounted this onto a white card.

Here is a close up of the copper splatters in the light, to try capture the shimmer from it, in real life it is fabulously shimmery!

I hope you enjoyed this very simple technique and it inspries you to give your watercolours a go!
