Using Pinterest for Business: Handmade Cards
In this part of our series on setting up a handmade business we look at using Pinterest for business. Even if you are just creating cards for fun, Pinterest can be a great way to find inspiration for your designs.
What is Pinterest?
Pinterest is a photo sharing social network (www.pinterest.com) and we think it is a great tool for marketing and raising awareness of your handmade card business. You can collect images from all over the internet and share them on your Pinterest board. The images all have embedded links, which means they automatically click through to the source from where they were pinned. Pinterest is useful not just for building collections of themed images (aka Pinterest boards) but also for bookmarking webpages to come back to - anything from card making inspiration to colour themed supplies boards like ours pictured above. Users on Pinterest, as with any other social network, can choose whether to follow your activity on the site. We recommend looking at the Pinterest 101 for basic details on how to pin and repin.
How can you use Pinterest for business to build traffic to your shop or blog
There are 2 approaches when using Pinterest for business. The first is to create content online that is 'pinnable'. If you include images of your handmade cards and paper crafts on your blog or website that are really beautiful then people will want to pin them and this will lead to referral traffic and a greater awareness of your work. You can add a 'pin it' button to remind people to pin. The second approach is to network with other pinners and build up a following on pinterest, this way when you share images from your own sites you will have a captive audience. Regular pinning (daily if possible) and also commenting and liking other peoples pins will see your follower numbers start to grow. We think the two Pinterest approaches should be worked at together. For card makers, connecting with other paper crafters, especially any influential bloggers is a great way to get your work spotted as many pinterest users will use their boards as inspiration for blog posts. Each time your cards are shared on the internet with a link back to your on line shop this improves your chances of being found when people are using search engines like Google. Most bloggers will have a link to their Pinterest boards on their blog. This amazing infographic explains exactly what to do in a really easy format.
