Hi Sylvia here with a contrast backing starburst tutorial for you. I have a lot of patterned paper pads which are half used and this type of card is ideal for using up these pretty papers. You can make your starburst card with plain, stamped or embossed coloured card too, again ideal for using up those spare scraps of your favourite Papermilldirect coloured card.
Materials required:
- Papermilldirect black, pale turquoise and white linen cardstock
- 6 different co-ordinating papers (or card)
- ruler, scissors and glue
- die cuts, image or sentiment stamps
Begin the card by cutting out all the pieces required to complete the card.
- 1 piece black card 3 3/4" x 5"
- 1 piece black card 4" x 5 1/4"
- 1 piece patterned paper 4 1/2" x 1 1/2"
- 1 piece patterned paper 4" x 1 1/2"
- 1 piece patterned paper 3" x 1 1/2"
- 1 piece patterned paper 2" x 1 1/2"
Cut each piece of patterned paper diagonally from top left hand corner to bottom right hand corner.
Take the 3 3/4" x 5" piece of black card and mark where you want the pieces to radiate from. Place the triangular pieces of patterned paper on the card with the points joining at the mark you made. Space out the pieces to give a starburst effect. When happy with your layout stick the pieces down. Don't worry about overlapping the edges of the card this will be trimmed later.
Trim the overlapping edges and mount the starburst onto the piece of 4" x 5 1/4" black card. This panel can now be mounted onto a white card blank. Decorate the card to cover the area where the points meet with either a sentiment, image or rosette to finish the card.
To make a rosette cut a narrow strip of card and score along the length at 1/4" intervals, concertina fold the strip and join at the ends. Gently push down to form the rosette and stick to a small circle of card to hold the rosette together. This can be a little tricky a glue gun or very tacky glue are ideal for sticking the rosette down.
I hope this tutorial has inspired you to use some of those scraps of card and paper you have, and don't forget to post your wonderful creations on our Facebook page for us all to see.
