The trend for hand written calligraphy was huge in 2017 and has exploded into 2018. We are living in an increasingly digital world and the art form that is hand lettering has a special and unique feel to it. Skilled modern-day scribes are cultivating this ancient tradition with modern and contemporary twists.
We have seen this trend take over the stationery market, wedding stationery market and it has even been featured on the catwalk in Emporio Armani’s Spring Summer 2018 show. Calligraphy is no long just restrained to wedding stationery, we are seeing it arrive in marketing, design and editorials.
Hand lettering adds a personal touch to anything it is used with and mixed with modern materials it creates an enchanting design.

Tip 1: Surround yourself with like-minded, positive people. You want to be encouraged, but also receive constructive criticism and useful advice. If possible, join a group such as UK Letterers (find us on FB and Instagram) to be able to discuss ideas and ways forward.
Tip 2: Don't scrimp on good quality materials such as inks, pens and card, but accept that having these materials won't instantly make your work better! Sometimes just a pencil and plain paper are all you need to get the creative juices flowing.
Tip 3: Strive for progress, not perfection. There will always be people better than you, and you'll always see flaws in your work. Just try to make each piece you produce better than the ones you did before. Keeping old pieces so you can see how far you've come is great for a confidence boost when you're feeling low.
