When it comes to birthday cards and presents, everyone appreciates a touch of personality that makes them feel appreciated. If someone in your life has a birthday coming up, whether it’s a friend or relative, then why not make them a customised birthday card?

In this blog, we’ll be running through four ideas for creative and unique birthday cards that you can make entirely yourself. Using a range of different materials, including those sourced from Papermill, it’s easy to craft a sentimental birthday card that your recipient will appreciate. Let’s get into the ideas, shall we?

Birthday Candles

Nicole Mullen

A card that works for any recipient, is this cute Birthday Candles design by Nicole Mullen. It combines deep hues of burgundy and gold with a fun star patterned backdrop – which you could switch out for another pattern if you prefer.

To make this card, begin by creating a mat of our Pastel Pink and Persian Pink card onto a white card blank. Then, use a frame die cut to create the same shape from the pastel pink card onto pink star card and repeat this on the next size down on the same frame die. In order to keep the frame attached to the inner piece, use a small piece of tape on the back until the backs are adhered using glue or foam tape. Create candles from our Pink Striped card and use Mango Yellow Plain Card to create the effect of flames. Add the patterned frames to the card and the candles to the top, using some of the pink cards to create a sentiment banner of your choosing.

Happy Birthday Weave Card Pastel Yellow, Pink, and Orange

Tracy Home

This Happy Birthday Weave Card is perfect for anyone with a spring birthday, with the blend of pastel yellows, pinks, and oranges. What’s even better is that you won’t find this kind of intricate, detailed design in just any card shop, so it truly adds that personalised touch. If you’re not a fan of the pastels, then switch out the weave colours for whichever colour combination you like – the possibilities are endless!

To make this card, begin by choosing your card colours and cutting half-inch strips for each. To replicate the tutorial’s colours, we recommend using a combination of Sunlight Yellow Plain Card, Pastel Pink Plain Card, and Pastel Orange Plain Card. Prepare your paper pieces by adding double-sided tape along two adjoining sides, peel back the adhesive, and start sticking your strips onto one side of the paper, choosing whether you want the different pieces close together or spaced out. Once completing the first side, peel back the adhesive on the other side and add your strips. It’s then time to implement the traditional under-then-over weaving method to get this unique look. Add double-sided tape to the other sides of the paper and stick down the woven edges a little at a time so that you get an evenly spaced finish weave.

Cut three frames from white card and then stack and glue them together. It’s best to use a liquid adhesive for this, as a little wiggle room is crucial for getting everything properly aligned. Glue the completed stack of white card on top of the weave. Trim the excess background for a finished frame, and then cut your desired sentiment using your preferred card. In the tutorial, Tracy uses a sentiment made of holographic embossing powder and a white background. Assemble all the pieces together to reveal your finished card!

Slimline Birthday in Rich Cream and Turquoise

Annette Connelly

For a simplistic yet meaningful design, this Slimline Birthday Card in Rich Cream and Turquoise by Annette is a fantastic choice. Using a combination of our Rich Cream Card Hemp and Pale Turquoise Plain Card, create a base of 10cm x 21cm and emboss the last layer should you prefer. The turquoise card should make up a thin layer around the card to keep that sleek appearance. Using a silhouette cutter, cut your desired text, and add two outline layers in alternating hemp and turquoise for further definition. Finally, cut some flower shapes to be placed around the text.

Birthday Controller Card

For a slightly more masculine or teenager-appropriate birthday card, this Birthday Controller Card features a gaming controller that would be perfect for anyone into video games. To make this card, make or find a template for the controller and cut it out using Nero Nettuno Linen Effect Card. Glue the controller shape onto a base of White Card, and around the edges, use distressed oxide ink to create further visual interest. Add in your sentiment cut from Baby Blue Pure Pearl Single Sided Card, using Stick it 3-D Foam dots and Anita’s PVA tacky glue to pull everything together.
